You can get to Whiskey Island
If you hustle down the hill
Where the isthmus begins,
By 54th Street.
But if you go to Whiskey Island
You should never go alone
Because the railroad's
Built on graveyards and stone
And a railroad engine
Breaks your whiskey bones.
When the Indians in Cleveland
Settled by the southern shore,
Where the Cuyahoga
Empties into Erie,
I imagine they meandered
To the point
And swam back home,
Feeling grateful
For a break wall of their own.
For a time on Whiskey Island
Irish stevedores would brawl
Out frustration
From their never ending labors.
And the whiskey bars would fill up
For the Whiskey Island crawl
From the time they got off work
Until last call
Till the railroad ran 'em over.
All in all
The history of Irish
Living on the Whiskey Isle
Is, by most accounts,
Not one very pleasant.
They lived and drank and died there
And were buried near the shore
By the weary, mournful shovels
Of the poor,
Whose comfort was
Their lovers with the Lord.
Now there's commerce and endeavor
And the isthmus is all owned
By the salt mine and the county
And the railroad.
And if pellets and great piles of stone
Is how we're to be known
I say, give 'em Whiskey Island
And a loan
To organize old Irish whiskey bones.
Organize the Irish,
Organize the Irish,
Organize old Irish Whiskey bones.
